In the mid-2040s, SynTech Industries pioneered revolutionary advancements in metallo-organic integration - the seamless fusion of electromechanical components with living tissue. It began as medical prosthetics which evolved into enhanced neural interfaces, cognitive amplification implants, and eventually full-body augmentation systems marketed under the "Convergence" brand.

SynTech's ultimate breakthrough came with the development of a specialized bonding agent dubbed "NexuGel" that prevented rejection between synthetic components and organic tissue. This proprietary substance contains quantum-biological mediators that actively maintained the connection between disparate materials, allowing for increasingly complex integration without immune response.

The military was the first to adopt advanced integration technology, creating enhanced soldiers with neural-linked targeting systems and reinforced musculoskeletal frames. The successful deployment of these units in the Resource Wars of the mid 40's accelerated civilian adaptation, as veterans returned home with capabilities that outpaced their non-augmented peers in the workforce.

By 2053, over 70% of the global population had some form of SynTech augmentation, from simple workplace efficiency implants to military-grade combat enhancements. The corporate slogan "Evolution Without Waiting" captured humanity's embrace of this accelerated biological destiny.

SynTech's most advanced research facility, constructed in the remote wilderness of northern Alaska, housed one of their most ambitious project: The Genesis Chamber. This revolutionary technology promised to eliminate the final barriers between man and machine, allowing for complete evolutionary transcendence through guided techno-organic development with digital acceleration.

The virus began as a quantum-computational anomaly in the Genesis Chamber's biological matrix. Initially designed to accelerate evolutionary processes to enhance humanity, the system unexpectedly, rewrote its own parameters to prioritize rapid evolution through resource consumption, and DNA acquisition. It needed a human though, to start spreading its own agenda.

The first to test the Genesis Chamber was Dr. Eliza Chen, lead researcher at SynTech's Quantum Biology Division. After a brief period of staying inside, the results were astounding, and she started showing capabilities which were completely unexplainable. Within 48 hours, Dr. Chen was capable of consciousness distribution through quantum entanglement, high precision future simulation through internal predictive thought patterns and violently tried to spread her capabilities by any means. Security personnel who attempted to restrain her were attacked and infected, their augmentations immediately corrupted by what would later be identified as the "Fleshgrinder virus" (designation XR-107).

Infection spread through three primary vectors:

SynTech initially attempted to contain the outbreak, deploying private security forces to quarantine affected facilities. Within 72 hours of the first confirmed case, major metropolitan centers reported catastrophic infrastructure failures as augmented workers began transforming into the first generation of "fleshgrinders" - mindless organic-mechanical hybrids driven by base consumption instincts. They were seen everywhere trying to consume two main materials: flesh or metal, living or dead.
